Simon Fissa University has three campuses, namely, the main campus in Benabi, the satellite campus in central Vancouver Harbour Center, and the new Surrey campus. It is also a partner on the Great North Road Campus in Vancouver. After the closure of a technical university founded by the New Democratic Party in 2002, the University of Science and Technology of British Columbia, part of the students were transferred to Simon Fissa University, which became the core of the Western Surrey Campus. The main campus covers an area of 1.7 square kilometers and is located on Mount Benabi at an altitude of 400 meters. The campus was designed by Ericsson and Marcy, both of whom won a design competition in 1963. Simon Fraser University was founded when W.A.C. Benard, chairman of the Social Credit Party of British Columbia, served as governor of the province, and the library on the main campus was named after him. Part of the Benabi Mountains below West University is a park and conservation observation area. Apart from Simon Fissa University itself and its related industrial research park Discovery Park, there were few development projects until 2003, when the University began to develop 200 acres of land near the campus hill for the construction of a model and sustainable development community, named Univer City. There were up to 4,500 residential buildings in the community. The unit is divided into several small communities with new town centres, schools, parks and other facilities. By January 2006, 585 residential buildings and the Cornerstone Building with restaurants and shops had been completed. Another 400 houses are under construction, and some of the characteristics of this community are beginning to attract the attention of foreigners. These features include Canada's first Community Public Transport Pass Scheme, the legal secondary suites that provide shelter for all, a model rainwater treatment system, and policies that prohibit multinational businesses from opening branches.
